'Maizing Grace- Grow A Row Project
For the fifth year Salem has a growing project for the Foods Resource Bank (FRB). The Foods Resource Bank provides funding for sustainable agricultural projects around the world to provide families the dignity and security of raising their own food. Local Growing Projects in the U.S. are the way money is raised for FRB – successful agriculture supporting developing agriculture.
Twenty-five acres of corn have been planted across from the youth baseball fields by the Lewis Central administrative offices. Pioneer has donated the seed corn, Bob Adkins and Sons have donated the planting equipment and labor, Agriland Insurance has donated the federal crop insurance premium, and Thien Farm Management, Inc. is providing management and marketing. Other costs include rent of the land, fertilizer, harvest equipment and labor, and trucking the corn to the elevator.
To cover these costs and generate more income to donate to FRB, Salem members are invited to sponsor a row or rows of corn at $10.00 per row. Our goal is to sponsor all 528 rows of corn. You are particularly invited to sponsor a row or rows in honor of a father, grandfather, family, friend, neighbor, etc. with ties to agriculture or, of course, anyone you would like to honor. In 2009 the Salem investment of $5,484.03 was converted to $14,112.53 for the final donation to FRB from our local Growing Project!!!! The funds were designated to agricultural projects in Zambia and Gambia. Let’s see what can be accomplished with our corn crop in 2010! Thank you so much.
